I'm writing on the Hong Kong Police at the end of the nineteenth century, when they recruited frequently from 'home' forces - at that time including the RIC, of course. A group of men came out who were all on the RIC roster - but it appears that they had not started service with the RIC. Has anyone come across this term before? does it imply a list of men approved but not yet engaged? or is the term (used in the HK documents) erroneous? One of the group said that he'd 'answered an advertisement' for the posting - surely in the RIC magazine? Any ideas welcome please!
