Pat could you tell me what the small writing is bottom right hand corner of each certificate? I suspect this will be the printer or engraver details.

The optional subject referred to may refer to one of the following: copying imperfect manuscripts; indexing or docketing; digesting returns etc into summaries; book keeping by single entry; or any one of the following; Latin, French, German, Geography and English History (source London Gazette 14 June 1901 p4008 ) Fees were payable by the applicant for each examination. The London Gazette of 9 May 1902 gives the following scale: Class 3 2s 6d; Class 2 5s 0d; Class 1 7s 6d. That would have been a sizeable sum of the time. Incidentally the signatures under the Class 2,3 and Optional certificates are those of John Mills Goldsmith, head of the DMP Office and Sir John Ross of Bladensburg, Chief Commissioner of the DMP. The signatures under the Class 1 certificate are those of Walter Alexander Magill and Lt Col Sir Walter Edgeworth-Johnston.
